Uganda Youth Skills Training Organisation (UYSTO) conducted Mpreneur national camp as part of the activities which are supposed to be implemented under the Mpreneur project. The camp was conducted on 7th and 8th of September 2022.

The camp was organised in a process where UYSTO advertised a call for participants in the national camp via social media platforms (twitter and Facebook) and the organization website, though this being a new project with us as an organization, we also shared the information through our already existing network partner organizations.

 Amongst the applications received three were ladies and twelve were gents making a total of 15 applicants. The selection of best applicants was managed by UYSTO-Mpreneur project staff and one external expert from Supercom technologies company limited, with over 15 years of experience in facilitating workshop training and holding boot camps. He has good expertise in social mobile entrepreneurship formation and business implementation, worn several other awards in the same while in his early stages of involving in the same field. The shortlist presented 10 applicants from 15 general applications. Some of the apps selected had been launched and others still under pre-launched, those with unlaunched apps had the capacity to launch them before 22nd October 2022.

The national camp was a non-residential and on site, hosted at Grand Global Hotel Kikoni-Kampala Uganda. The camp consisted 10 short listed participants with 9 gents and 1 lady. It took two days from 7th-8th September 2022. UYSTO had 3 facilitators who trained and prepared participants to pitch their mobile apps before the jury team.

The jury team consisted 7 members with 3 experts /camp facilitators, one external and 3 UYSTO staff. The 4 of the jury team have great experience in mobile apps, coding, ict and practicing social mobile entrepreneurship, 1 UYSTO staff with the same experience and 2 with entrepreneurship and project management experiences. 

Several activities have been conducted including team building activities for ice breaking, breaking barriers, social interactions, creating trust and confidentiality, effective communication and peer group activities like completing tasks together, mentorship among other. 

Day 1 Activities: Registration, introduction, camp expectations, setting camp regulations and rules Starting and Running a Successful Social Mobile Enterprise – The Business Model Canvas, Mobile APP Development, Marketing and Pitching, Pre-pitching presentations, Mobile APP Usage and Marketing, days’ Assessment. 

Day 2 Activities: Recap from Yesterday, One-on-One Sessions – Mentorship, Mobile APP Management, Mobile APP Pitching and Selection, announcing the best winners/apps.  

 

All participants presented their mobile apps, the 4 mobile apps were selected, but the extreme best two considered as the winning ones. (Emun by Shadiah Nasanga and Onduka by Mugabi Enock). The selection of the best 4 apps has been juror’s extra idea for just in case any of the best two apps owners gets challenges that might affect the project processes.
